Case Study - 3.24kW Solar PV System

Design Brief

To reduce the clients electricity bills as much as possible using solar PV modules on the roof of the property.

System Specification
  • Peak Output: 3.24kWp
  • Estimated Annual Production: 2,592kWh
  • Estimated Annual CO² saved: 1115kg
  • System Dimensions: 8,946mm x 2,636mm
  • Solar Modules: 18 x NU-180 Sharp 180W (Mono)
  • Inverter: Fronius IG30

The Solar PV system on garage roof (right hand side) supplies energy for the home (left hand side). All the energy produced by this Solar Photovoltaic system is sold to the client's energy provider at a rate of 10p/kWh. We have estimated a financial return of £250 per year (at current energy prices). The garage roof was chosen because it faces South, this is the optimum orientation for photovoltaic modules.

Care was taken to achieve an aesthetically pleasing design which fitted with the surroundings and the property.

The client decided to install Solar PV array rather than a Wind Turbine as they were keen to avoid any large disturbance to the property and garden. A wind turbine would have required excavation of a cable trench through the established garden. This Solar PV system did not require planning permission, which was also attractive to the client.

The Solar PV array was installed and commissioned within 2 days by feed-in engineers.

A system of this size would qualify for a £2,500 Low Carbon Buildings Grant towards the total cost.
