The following is designed to determine if you site is suitable for a wind turbine.
Positioning
The optimum position for a wind turbine would be on the top of a hill and completely exposed 360° and away from any buildings, trees etc.
Don't worry if you don't have an optimum site, the above specification is in an ideal world and rarely happens.
Throughout the UK the prevailing wind is from the south west. So for example, even if your site is partially covered by trees to the north but has open areas to the south west, your site is most likely still suitable.
It is important to be as high as possible, the higher above ground level the higher the wind velocity.
Wind speed
The power production of the wind turbine is proportional to the wind speed at the site. So if your wind speed is poor then this will reflect on the power output from your wind turbine.
feed-in has two levels of wind analysis, basic and advanced. See below for details.
Basic (free of charge)
feed-in convert your site’s postcode into a six character Ordnance Survey grid reference. This is then imputed in the DTI's UK Wind Speed data base which generates an approximate annual wind speed.
This is a very useful tool, however it is by no means precise.
Advanced
The feed-in advanced wind analysis package includes the installation of a wind speed/direction sensor and data logger at you site. This system will be installed for minimum 6 months (at least 1 year is recommended). The data from this analysis will be used to model the proposed wind turbine’s output. This is a very effective way of getting a clear picture of the wind turbine’s performance at a fraction of the cost of a full installation. If you would like further information please contact us.
Planning Permission
Currently planning permission is required if the below are correct:
- Wind turbine exceeds 3m in height,
- Wind turbine is nearer to any highway than the nearest part of the "original house", although disregard this if turbine is further than 20m from the highway.
Unfortunately due to the height restrictions all feed-in wind turbines require planning permission.
We are able to apply for planning permission on your behalf this service is charged at £250.00 which is completely refundable if you decide to go ahead with the installation.
