A PV solar module converts the photons in light into electrons.

As sunlight falls upon the solar cells within a PV module a proportion travels through the protective layer and is absorbed within the semiconductor material (silicon), the energy from the light is transferred to the semiconductor.

This energy knocks electrons from their bonds allowing them to flow freely thus producing an electric current. An electric field between two layers of silicon controls the direction of this flow.

The main component in a solar PV cell is silicon. The silicon is doped before it's used within a solar cell. Doping is the process of mixing impurities (other atoms) with atoms.

The cell consists of N-Type silicon which has been doped with phosphorous and P-Type silicon which is doped with Boron. The introduction of these elements alters the two layers creating a negative layer and a positive layer. (N-Type= Negative) (P-Type =Positive)

Pure silicon is a poor conductor of electricity as none of its electrons are free to move. Adding impurities to silicon makes the bonds in the structure more unstable thus making it more susceptible to the effect of energy.

P-Type silicon has missing electrons so has holes; the N-Type layer has free flowing electrons. When the two layers are introduced the free flowing electrons from the N-Type move into the holes in the P-Type layer.

We provide an external current path on the route to the other layer accessing this electric energy.

This energy is then used to power our electrical appliances.
